Divorce is still not possible in Malta. Only the church has the power to annul a marriage. Now the Maltese are voting on a change to the law which would legalize divorce.Alongside the Philippines, Malta is the only country in the world where the sentence until death us do part is taken literally. If a couple does not want to stay together anymore they can separate, but they cannot marry other partners. A recent bill in parliament would clear the way for divorce in the future. The Roman Catholic Church in Malta is protesting vigorously and has even threatened ex-communication. Now the Maltese are to hold a referendum on the issue.
